Subtopia

Subtopia is a creative cluster South of Stockholm, in Botkyrka municipality. This is where artists, film producers, circus companies, NGOs, bands and other creative people follow their dreams and try to make the world a little better.

Subtopia houses around 80 organisations, companies, and educational institutions, and 200 people go to work there every day. Subtopia is the hub in this network of people and ideas. They serve as a platform where organisations and individuals get the chance to develop their creativity on their own terms.

Subtopia is involved in different projects ranging from circus productions, urban development and film support to commercial events. Their main focus is on contemporary circus, film production and urban art but the organisations within Subtopia work with a diversity of art forms including music, theatre, dance, public art, mask making and more.

Subtopia is the core catalyst in Botkyrka municipality’s commitment to the arts and entertainment industry. Subtopia is a part of the municipally-owned company, Upplev.

What makes the organisation unique?

There are not so many cultural centres in Sweden that focus on artists and the production of art. Subtopia does that. There is also a lot to experience here for an audience but Subtopia makes space for everything that comes before the actual performance/artwork/movie. And Subtopia is not just a centre, it is a cluster of cultural organisations of different kinds. What is also unique is that the centre works to combine art, business, education and social engagement and it does that with the whole spectrum – from amateurs to professionals. With this also comes a variety of projects that, in different ways, aims to support and develop art and also the conditions for creating art.
