Autonomous Cultural Centre Attack (AKC Attack) is a grassroots cultural organisation based in Zagreb, Croatia, active since 1997. It was established by members of the Zagreb Anarchist Movement and the Anti-War Campaign Croatia in response to the needs of the independent cultural scene and socially engaged collectives in the post-war social context.
Since its inception, Attack has advocated for access to space and infrastructure for independent culture. In the absence of institutional support, the organisation has employed various models of temporary and long-term use of abandoned spaces, including occupations, in order to secure conditions for cultural and social activities. Today, Attack operates within the former Medika factory complex in Zagreb, a space that was transformed in 2007, together with other organisations and independent collectives, into one of the most important hubs of independent culture in Croatia.
While AKC Attack is not the sole user of the Medika complex, it manages approximately 900 square metres of space, including Club Attack, Gallery Siva, the community and creative space Infoshop Pippilotta, the production facilities of Film Studio Medika, office spaces, a shared kitchen, and several accommodation units dedicated to artist residencies and visiting programmes.
Through its activities, Attack continuously supports and develops the independent cultural scene, with a particular focus on young people, emerging artists, and socially engaged cultural practices. Its programme encompasses concerts and events within the independent and DIY music scene, performing, visual and experimental arts, film screenings and production, festivals, artist residencies, as well as a wide range of educational, participatory and discursive programmes.
Over the years, Attack has initiated and developed numerous original programmes and festivals, including FAKI – Festival of Alternative Theatre Expression, OHOHO Festival of DIY Comics and Street Art, and Glitch Cult Festival, dedicated to glitch and digital art. These programmes bring together local and international artists, cultural workers and audiences around contemporary, experimental and interdisciplinary artistic practices.
Through long-running educational programmes such as Attack's Factory and Veliki Odmor (The Big Break), young people gain free access to education in culture and the arts, practical skills development, and direct involvement in the organisation and production of cultural events. Programmes developed through Gallery Siva, Subscene and Film Studio Medika further expand residency and production opportunities for visual, performing and film artists.
A special emphasis is placed on inclusivity, accessibility and the creation of a safe space for diverse social groups. The organisation develops programmes for children, young people, senior citizens, refugees and migrant communities, while continuously fostering participatory and solidarity-based models of space and programme management.
On an annual basis, AKC Attack organises more than 80 music programmes, including concerts, electronic music events and festivals, around 25 exhibitions, approximately 10 artist residencies, and more than 40 educational, discursive and participatory programmes. Through its activities, the organisation engages more than 10,000 visitors, participants and collaborators each year, making a significant contribution to the development and visibility of independent culture in Zagreb, Croatia and the wider international cultural landscape.
