Trans Europe Halles Hosts Side Event within New European Bauhaus Festival
How can we make our spaces more innovative and eco-friendlier? What affordable solutions are out there? And how to ensure that all stakeholders are on board? What role can culture and arts play in the process?
Join our side event “Repurposing Buildings Through Arts, Circular Design and Environmental Innovation” within the framework of the Festival of the New European Bauhaus.
The event will take place on 9 June between 15.00-18.00 CEST at community centre RECYCLART located in the Molenbeek area. It is free and open to anyone interested circular design, heritage, urban regeneration, community engagement, sustainability, environmental innovation and sustainable architecture. It will be a meeting point for architects, cultural professionals and researchers working on the topics and willing to build new connections and learn about latest global trends in the field.
We will showcase two new international projects that are perfectly aligning with the New European Bauhaus agenda: ‘Re-Building to Last’ (Europe) and ‘The Global Centre for Climate Resilience through Arts and Design’ (Canada). A comparative perspective will be brought by the City Architect of Brussels, who will share some of the best practices and challenges from the area.
There will also be an opportunity to network and meet peers from across Europe.

About the projects in the spotlight
‘Re-Buidling to Last’is a Creative Europe project aiming to build the capacity of grassroots and community-led cultural organisations to understand and address the sustainable future of their buildings, and to make the case that cutting edge environmental innovation, low cost circular design practices, or access to green real estate investment can contribute to a more sustainable future for culture.
The Global Centre for Climate Resilience through Arts and Design is an ambitious project led by OCAD University and the City of Toronto, Canada aiming to repurpose the Canada Malting Silos landmark and to bring together local communities, researchers, artists, designers, innovators and policymakers from Toronto, Canada, Europe and other parts of the world to reassess the role of arts and design in the fight against climate change.
Trans Europe Halles is the proud partner of this project alongside ERA Architects, a Canadian studio specialising in repurposing Heritage buildings.
Book launch Recycl’art: This project focuses on the Heyvaert neighborhood and its surroundings. Architects, urban planners, associations, share their thoughts on the question of public spaces and sharing in a context in full mutation. What form does shared space take today? How does it develop? What is the social role of architecture and urbanism? Through a photographic trail and various testimonies about the challenges that the various projects brought to light, this publication explores the complexity of the urban and social identity of this part of our city.
This event is offical part of the Festival of New European Bauhaus – a new initiative launched by the European Commission.
