When Russia's invasion forced Ukrainian artists and cultural professionals from their homes, many found themselves without the networks, opportunities or recognition needed to rebuild their careers abroad. Re-Source Ukraine set out to change that, supporting European organisations in helping displaced Ukrainian artists re-establish their practice within the European cultural scene.

About the initiative

The project was born from a needs-assessment workshop conducted during TEH Conference 93 in Prague in May 2022. The workshop opened an in-depth discussion between Ukrainian artists, cultural workers and European cultural organisations, identifying barriers and solutions for integrating Ukrainian artists and audiences into the European cultural scene as both artists and an engaged community, as well as the main barriers cultural organisations faced when working with Ukrainian artists, communities and audiences.

To support better inclusion of Ukrainian artists and cultural professionals in European contexts, the project included art productions connecting their practices with local Ukrainian communities, alongside networking events for artists and cultural professionals. Its central event was Ukraine Month in Europe, spanning European cultural centres to bring together local and Ukrainian artists to mark a year since the Russian invasion, showcase their artistic work, and reach wider local audiences.

Project activities

  • Welcoming Cities — two events in each participating country for local audiences and local Ukrainian communities, including workshops by Ukrainian artists and artistic productions aimed at the general public in the host country.
  • Ukraine Month in Europe — from 24 February to 24 March 2023, partner centres across all seven countries organised events by Ukrainian artists, promoted to both Ukrainian and local audiences across Europe.
  • Networking events — held in each of the seven countries, bringing Ukrainian artists and cultural creators together with local artists and organisations to build collaborations and professional networks.
  • Mentorship programme — offered to Ukrainian artists.
  • Information Centre — built to provide Ukrainian artists and cultural professionals with information on ongoing opportunities, calls, programmes and collaborations.

Who it was for

The project's partners primarily targeted Ukrainian artists, cultural and creative professionals, and communities across the seven participating countries. Cultural professionals and the management of cultural organisations from these countries were engaged too, alongside anyone interested in the project's outputs and methodology.
