GALA Funding and Resources Guide: for arts and culture projects related to environmental sustainability

The GALA Funding and Resources Guide – Second edition is the updated edition of the guide first produced in 2015 within the scope of the EU-funded project, Green Art Lab Alliance (GALA, in short).

The idea for the first edition of the funding and resources guide emerged during the two-year development of Green Art Lab Alliance project (2013-2015) and synthesises some of the approaches and funding models used by GALA partners to commission environmentally-themed work and practically explore new ways of working. It aimed to signpost artists to relevant funding bodies and encourage innovative ways to support cross-sector projects embedding environmental sustainability. Funding sources tended to be focused on a specific discipline, or targeted towards either the cultural sector or the environmental field, but rarely both at the same time. GALA team wanted to highlight the multiple and innovative ways that funding bodies were beginning to challenge this and recognised the growing genre of environmentally-themed cultural work, highlighted the various models through which artists and cultural organisations were finding support for arts and sustainability projects.

The second edition of the funding guide has been coordinated by On the Move and is based on research and updates carried out by Marta Gracia between September and December 2020. The second edition of the guide has been supported by the French Ministry of Culture and the Institut Francais. Contents support has been provided by the GALA network as well as by some On the Move's members and partners.

The guide is articulated around two main parts:

  • a first one around funding for arts and culture projects related to environmental sustainability (support schemes, transnational supports, European projects, residencies, festivals etc.)
  • a second one on sources of inspiration for more responsible action.

The focus is mostly on Europe with some international references and initiatives.
