Cultivating the Arts in Abandoned Spaces

What is the place of art and culture in the evolution of urban spaces? This book explores the dynamics of reappropriation by artistic circles, both with and without links with to local authorities. Drawing on several cases from Europe where artists have reclaimed abandoned industrial buildings, this book is both a history of “cultural wastelands” since the 1970s and a reflection on the modalities of repurposing by cultural actors, as well as by architects, audiences and communities.
