Terzo Paesaggio

Associate Member / Italy

Terzo paesaggio is an interdisciplinary community that brings together architects, changemakers, cultural designers, curators and artists. In its ten years of activity, Terzo Paesaggio has conducted projects and practices of culturally-based urban regeneration, managing and activating hybrid spaces.

Terzo Paesaggio experiments with practices of social and cultural innovation, with a specific focus on culturally-based urban regeneration in different territorial contexts, with particular attention to marginal areas, placing the theme of landscape at the centre, from object to subject acting in a field of negotiation with all communities of living beings, human and non-human.

Terzo Paesaggio moves between artistic research with a focus on participatory approaches and in-situ intervention, architectural and landscape design practices, and research on non-formal pedagogies.

It promotes cultural and artistic production projects with a focus on public and participatory art; it uses innovative learning and training approaches; it works with architectural and landscape design, brownfield redevelopment and soil regeneration.

Terzo Paesaggio connects the worlds of research, social innovation and the Contemporary, through dialogue with public administration and the local resources.

In almost 10 years of activity, it has activated culturally-based hybrid spaces and conducted projects at the intersection of the disciplines of art, architecture, pedagogy, cultivation and food, favouring participatory processes and employing the methodology of performative urban transformation projects. The majority of its governance is made up of women and people under 35.

With the special project MadreProject, Scuola del Pane e dei Luoghi (School of Bread and Places), winner of the 2021 Civic Crowdfunding competition organised by the Municipality of Milan, best Start Up for Impact by the Giordano dell’Amore Foundation, Terzo Paesaggio with Panificio Davide Longoni and Avanzi has launched the first school that accompanies aspiring bakers in setting up businesses with bread for the regeneration of the territories.

Since 2015, in Milan’s Chiaravalle neighborhood, the ancient cradle of European agriculture, Terzo Paesaggio has been reactivating the Padiglione Chiaravalle as a hybrid cultural space offering a public program open to the city and regenerating a portion of disused public heritage as a new cultural center dedicated to ecological transition. The Padiglione Chiaravalle in Milan is already an active community hub involving thousands of visitors.

As a cultural-based hybrid space is the headquarter of Terzo Paesaggio.

It also explored the innovative format of co-design camps, blending architectural interventions with artistic residencies.

Thanks to an extensive programming, made of talks, micro-services, artistic residencies, workshops, educational campuses, site specific performances, special events, Padiglione Chiaravalle reached 4,500 participants in 2024.
