On the industrial fringes of Amsterdam & Zaanstad, we, MAAKgemeenschap De Hoop, began building our studio village in 2018, housed in a former cardboard factory. The 10,000 m² old factory now houses 170 creative studios and workshops, where over 300 artists, creatives, and craftspeople are active.

Under the management of the Crealisatie Foundation, De Hoop has grown into a fertile breeding ground with ample shared workshops and facilities: a woodworking shop, a metal workshop, a ceramics workshop, a cooking workshop, a screen printing/graphics workshop, a bar/performance space, a community kitchen, and a meeting room.
This wide range of shared spaces stimulates the development and growth of our artists and makers. The Crealisatie philosophy has become a reality here: a network of facilities and initiatives where artists collaborate with craftspeople and develop.
The transformation from an open warehouse to a studio village was a massive construction project that we completed in phases. Since the completion and rental of the last studios, we have shifted our focus to building a self organising, sustainable community.
