Gabriel Caruana Foundation

The Gabriel Caruana Foundation manages the artistic programme of The Mill – Art, Culture and Crafts Centre. The Mill was opened as an independent artist run centre in 1990 by Gabriel Caruana (1929 – 2018) and Mary Rose Caruana. The Gabriel Caruana Foundation, established in 2016, is the natural progression of a lifetime that Gabriel Caruana dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Through the artistic programme of The Mill the Foundation supports emerging and established contemporary artists. They also collaborate with individuals and organisations to develop projects that inject contemporary artistic practices and processes into daily life to foster dialogue on socio-cultural and environmental thematics.

The Foundation’s artistic programming aims to engage with different audiences through exhibitions, workshops, seminars, literary and poetry nights and pop-up events. The Foundation is a registered voluntary organisation (VO1236) with the Commissioner of Voluntary Organisations since April 2016. It is also supported by Arts Council Malta through the Investment in Cultural Organisations Fund 2020-2022. The Foundation has an ongoing collaboration agreement with Fondazzjoni Kreattivita’.

What makes their organisation unique?

The Gabriel Caruana Foundation sees The Mill as a meeting point of tangible and intangible heritage where contemporary artistic discourse is unbound and where people feel the energy, resilience, creativity that permeates in and around The Mill.
