Over the last few years, a huge building project took place in the centre of Amsterdam. Together with the City Theatre and Toneelgroep Amsterdam (the biggest theatre group of the Netherlands), Melkweg built a new, state of the art theatre hall. The Rabozaal, named after founding partner Rabobank, will officially be opened on June 1st. Melkweg will organize 5 days of concerts and performances every month.
For Melkweg, the new hall provides a unique opportunity to broaden its program. The hall is perfect for seated and partially seated concerts, i.e. singer-songwriters and world music. Among the confirmed artists for the coming months are Cesaria Evora, David Byrne, Moby and Jamie Lidell. For concerts, the maximum capacity is 1500.
Besides the music program, Melkweg will expand its contemporary dance program with international productions. 500 visitors can watch spectacular performances on a surface of 30x20 meters. Also, multi-media productions with huge video projections and festivals can take place in the new hall.
